Ombúes de Lavalle Weekly.  (Friday, 4th June 2004)

Excellent performance by Duo Ceilteach.

The Origins of the Celtic peoples gets lost in history; apparently coming from the vast lands between Central Europe and the Black Sea, deducing that in 400 AC they crossed the river Rhein and the British Channel to occupy the British Isles.
In 500 AC they also crossed the Pyrenees and settled in the northern past of Iberian peninsula, when at the same time settled in Italy, later in Greece and Asia Minor so forging the greatest empire of the time; in spite of this, the lack of political units, resulted in the premature decadence of their power.
The Celts formed the base of the Latin nations, Saxon and Germanic, in whose languages the Celtic tongue left definitive roots.
On Saturday, 29th May in the Valdense Church of Ombúes de Lavalle, we received a beautiful present; that of appreciating the professional  presence of two direct descendents of these above people who so much have influenced our race.
Mrs. Eleña Mariño, music teacher from Crandon Institute of Montevideo and William Shaw who studied in the Montevideo Municipal Music School, as all of a professional, transforms the written musical notes into soft melodies with the sound of his trumpet; and the chords of Elena’s organ, together, sound like a complete philharmonic.
Starting the concert with a fast allegro – as trumpet as tambourine, both need to warm up to sound better and the evening was cold –
By H. Purcell 1659-1695, a fanfare the “feeling” with the public was established immediately, S. Winner, g F Handel – continuing with popular Irish music, when we were transported back in time, hearing the “pipes”, instated by the keyboard and united trumpet, back to the 17th or 16th century.
Later came “Tarantellas” from Italy and of course we could not be left without a couple of tangos – “Caminito” by Peñaloza and Filiberto and “The day you’ll love me” by Carlos Gardel.
To end the concert come J Hartmanns “Arbucklenian Polka” keyboard and trumpet in complete communication, whence the combination of instruments and player clearly demonstrated the professionalism and style to achieve perfection.
The diversity of sounds and notes from high and low, from fortissimo to pianissimo made it seem we were listening to a complete philharmonic orchestra, with her instrument, and William’s trumpet music ending in an enormous applause which demanded an encore.
Interviewing these two great musicians, was really interesting; sharing a moment of their knowledge of music, the importance of their Celtic ancestry… when someone loves their activity so, this is perfection reached.
We can only add now our gratitude to the Valdense Church in Ombúes, for inviting them; and allowing us to improve our musical Knowledge beside these performances, and undoubtedly will not be the last time; so far now, thank you so much Elena and William.
