20th Century (1900 - 1999) |
Music from the 20th century wanted to represent the world as it was truly perceived. Artists desired to be objective, while objects existed on their own. While previous periods concentrated on spirituality, this new era placed emphasis on physicality and concrete things. |

Music that belongs to the general romantic movement in art and literature of the late 18th century and early 19th century. It was based on emotion, adventure and imagination. Renaissance (1450 - 1600) |
| |
Music written during the years 1400 and 1600 aprox. Characterized by greater use of instrumentation, multiple melodic lines and by the use of the first bass instruments. One of the most pronounced features of early Renaissance music was the increasing use of the interval of the third as a consonance. This modal characteristic began to break down by the end of this period with the increased use of the fifth. |

Medieval (450 - 1450) |
| |
Music written during the Middle Ages (476 – 1400). In this period music was both sacred (music written for religious use) and secular (nonreligious music). At the beginning, medieval music is monophonic and homorhythmic and has no instrumental support. The notation system is very poor, with no specific rhythm. Characterized by the simplicity of chant, a unison voice and natural declamation. |
